Sierra de Montánchez
Due to its orographic location, situated 1000 m above sea level, Montánchez is known as "el balcón de Extremadura" (the balcony of Extremadura).
From the geographic point of view, it is located in the centre of a triangle formed by the three historic cities of Trujillo, Mérida and Cáceres (the last two World Heritage Sites). Easily accessible, it is only about 45 km away from each one of these cities.
The town and the hills enjoy amazing views of the rolling countryside below, and the whole area is considered a natural paradise blessed with a rich wildlife (especially birds).
Visitors can enjoy all kinds of outdoor activities: hiking in the sierra (with several marked trails), paragliding, horseback riding, etc., or visiting the town and its beautiful castle, paying special attention to gastronomy, with excellent wines and the most refined ham in the world: the Iberic ham (from black pigs fed on acorns).
